Ingredients

  • 1 slice brown bread
  • 1 slice white bread
  • 1 slice white cheese (such as Swiss or Havarti)
  • 1 slice orange cheese (such as Cheddar)
  • 3 or 4 choices of spreads, such as butter, mayonnaise, ketchup, honey, nut-free butter, or hummus
  • apple slices, pear slices, or baby-cut carrots to serve

Directions

  1. Spread condiments of your choice on the slices of bread.
  2. Top the white bread with both cheese slices. Cover with the brown bread.
  3. Cut sandwiches into 9 squares, like a tic-tac-toe board (two cuts in each direction).
  4. Turn over alternate squares so that you have a checkerboard effect.
  5. Serve with apples, pears, or carrots on the side.

NOTE: Use a cookie cutter to cut out the same shape in the white bread and brown bread slice. Replace the white cutout with the brown cutout, and vice versa.
